Independent Status in Antigua and Barbuda
The advent of tourism, especially from the 1970s onwards, provided the economic growth and stability which allowed Antigua and Barbuda to stand on its own two feet.
On 1st November 1981, full sovereign independence was achieved, and for the first time in over 300 years, the Union Flag was lowered, replaced by the Antiguan national flag.
