Caribs
The warlike Carib Indians who had initially forced the Arawaks out of South America, exported their reign of terror throughout the Caribbean. In the 2nd Century continuous ferocious raids of Antigua eventually forced the Awaraks away. However, the Caribs made no attempt at permanent settlement here over the following centuries, preferring to use the island as a base for further expansion. That didn’t stop them attacking the would-be colonialists from Europe in the 16th and 17th Century. Whilst the Caribs continued their fierce resistance from other islands, their presence on Antigua was ended in a spectacular bloodbath in 1640.
