Arawaks

Some time in the 1st century, the pastoral Arawaks began settling the Caribbean from South America, bringing with them new systems of trade and agriculture, and introducing crops such as corn, sweet potato, cassava and pineapple. The Arawaks’ peaceful and industrious pastoral life appears to have lasted over 1,000 years.
